Tetanus Antitoxin is recommended for use whenever a animal suffers a deep penetrating wound that may become contaminated with soil.
Antitoxin may also be administered to animals following castration or docking, or horses that have suffered a puncture wound in the hoof.
Provides immediate passive immunity that lasts 7-14 days.
Available in a single 1,500 dose or a 10 dose vial
For prevention in horses, cattle, swine, and sheep: 1,500 units IM or SQ. (1500 units = 1 single dose.)
For treatment:
Horses and cattle: give 10,000 to 25,000 units
Sheep and swine: give 5,000-12,500 units.
Also approved for Goats:
Colorado serum recommends using one 1,500 unit vial per goat regardless of size/age for prevention and higher levels (3x and higher) for treatment.
Vaccination with tetanus toxoid is recommended for healthy domestic animals not infected with tetanus, to establish an active immunity for prevention against disease. Consult with a veterinarian for specific vaccination recommendations.
